|Railways in the Sirhowy Valley|
Author: W W Tasker
Before the coming of the ironworks and collieries, the Sirhowy Valley was wild and untouched by industrial activity, full of thickets, cornfields and meadows and sprinkled with small hamlets.
However as the furnaces and coal levels in the Sirhowy Valley started to greatly expand production it soon become apparent that the local lanes and the existing canal were insufficient to enable all the products to be transported down to the wharves on the River Usk in Newport and that another option was required.
The founders of the Tredegar Ironworks worked with the Monmouthshire Canal Company to construct the Shirhowy Tramroad which ran right down to the River Usk and this was then built on in later years to form the basis of the Sirhowy Valley railway.
Lovers of history and railway enthusiasts alike will enjoy the detailed historical information contained in this book which is illustrated with a very large number of old black and white photographs.
