|Caldicot and the Villages of the Moor - Volume 1|
Author: Malcolm D Jones
This first Volume of Caldicot and the Villages of the Moor is an absorbing study of the South Eastern corner of Wales reflected in a series of old photographs.
From the 12th Century the monks of Goldcliff Priory drained the marshy lands adjoining the Severn Estuary creating what we now know as the Caldicot Levels and this book covers Caldicot along with the villages of Magor, Portskewett, Redwick, Rogiet, Sudbrook and Undy using more than 200 photographs together with some relevant text.
This fragment of the old county of Gwent is rich in history, ranging from a variety of ancient castles through to a turn of the century shipbuilding industry and the marvels of tunnelling beneath the forcible River Severn.
The community spirit that exists within the villages is well captured by the inclusion of numerous pictures, as are the religious and educational beliefs.
The topographical studies in this book are also certain to remind the reader of the enormous changes that have taken place during the past 100 years which will appeal to all generations.
